TFO Streamer Showdown | Top 3 Rods for Chasing Predators

Fall Streamer Season

It’s fall. The air is colder, the days are shorter, and it’s time to throw some streamers.

Streamer season means big flies, aggressive strikes, and chasing fish that love a big meal. Whether you’re targeting trout, smallmouth, or stripers, the right rod makes all the difference.

Here are my top three TFO streamer rods that I keep ready for this time of year.

Every streamer has its moment. Organized chaos for those who know exactly where to look.

#1: BC Big Fly – 9’0″ 8 Weight

If I’m dedicating a whole day to streamer fishing for trout or smallmouth, my go-to rod is the 8-weight BC Big Fly.

Most anglers know the BC Big Fly for its 10- and 12-weight musky models, but the 8-weight is the unsung hero of the lineup. Designed for “banging the banks” with articulated streamers, it’s a powerhouse built on an extra-fast action blank that delivers accuracy, control, and power with heavy setups.

The BC Big Fly Rod comes in three weights, an 8, 10 and 12-weight to handle flies from three to 12+ inches.

Casting 250 to 350+ grain sinking lines all day takes a toll on your arm, wrist, and shoulder. The BC Big Fly’s extended grip and butt section make it far more comfortable for repetitive casting and hauling. The extra leverage reduces fatigue, making long days on the water easier and more efficient.

The rod also features Black Pearl Recoil guides by REC on the first three guides, premium components designed to withstand abuse and enhance line speed.

Whether you’re stripping for brown trout, working smallmouth structure, or chasing stripers, this rod delivers the power and feel you need to stay in the game all day.

#2: Solution – 9’0″ 7 Weight

When I’m fishing smaller or medium-sized rivers and want to be more technical, I reach for the 7-weight TFO Solution (07 90 4 SN).

This rod shines when finesse matters, such as in low-water conditions, with smaller streamers, or in clear, spooky conditions. Its moderate-fast action offers a smooth, responsive feel with precise casting control.

Built on an unsanded matte blank, the Solution recovers quickly for accurate, delicate presentations. Like the BC Big Fly, it features REC Recoil guides for durability and performance.

The Solution is a 10-rod series that spans 8 to 10 feet, covering everything from small water trout to larger anadromous fish.

One of my favorite design touches on the Solution is the dual hook keepers built into the back of the cork handle. Instead of bending your leader around the reel or guides, you can neatly secure your fly here, an often-overlooked but practical feature that makes this rod a standout.

The 7-weight Solution isn’t just a streamer stick. It’s also my favorite topwater smallmouth rod in the summer. It excels when you need precision and control without overpowering the presentation.

#3: LK Legacy – 9’0″ 7 Weight

Last but definitely not least is the 7-weight LK Legacy (TF 07 90 4 LK).

This rod has been a favorite among guides and anglers alike for years. The fast-action blank offers a crisp, timeless feel that excels in a wide range of conditions.

From a delicate 3-weight to the very popular 8-weight, the LK Legacy series offers 11 models that allow for perfect matching with a broad range of conditions, techniques, and species.

There are no unnecessary frills here, just a well-balanced, responsive rod that punches flies through the wind and holds its own on big water. I often bring it as a backup, but more often than not, I end up fishing it the rest of the day.

The LK Legacy 7-weight delivers straightforward performance and adaptability. Whether you’re covering big trout water or looking for a reliable all-around streamer rod, it deserves a permanent spot in your lineup.

Final Thoughts

Streamer season demands power, precision, and endurance, and these three rods from TFO deliver all three.

  • BC Big Fly (8wt) – Maximum power and leverage for big flies, heavy lines, and big fish.

  • Solution (7wt) – Finesse, precision, and technical control on smaller-medium water.

  • LK Legacy (7wt) – Fast, timeless, and reliable performance for big water trout.

Each offers its own feel and advantage, depending on how and where you fish. So, as the weather cools and fish feed up for winter, grab your favorite TFO streamer rod and get after it.
